I was so saddened today to read of Jim's passing. I have such good memories of playing b-ball with him through the years and always having a sweet smile and good conversation whenever we chanced to meet. My thoughts go out to his extended family and friends. I'm sure we were all blessed to have known him .

As.with Art Lloyd (nickname "Horn"), I too was an SAE fraternity brother of Jim's. I was one year behind him and came from Long Island. I was a witness to the incident that Art describes and It certainly wasn't pretty. I had a VW beetle that I drove to/from UMO on holiday and semester breaks. Jim's home in Meridon, CT was always along my way and I drove him to/from UMO many times. And that included his transition to more isolated living conditions when he moved to a small cabin with only a wood-burning stove in the latter stages of his college career. The Multi-hour rides were always memorable. I was occasionally his paddleball partner and can attest.to the awesome player he was. As with Art, my only time with Jim was our UMO years (and great days they were). But, he was always a "larger than life" personality who was clearly his own man who planned his own paths and followed them faithfully. In reading his obituary, I can only say that it appears that Jim followed a life path that I am not surprised to hear. A rugged, generous and faithful outdoorsman who lived his life on his own terms. Well done Jim. Phi Alpha. Your Brother, George Marshack

How sorry I was to just learn that Jim Dinnan passed away recently. We were SAE fraternity brothers in the late 60’s at UMO where I was a year ahead of Jim. He was a big strong athletic looking guy who as I recall had been a premier high school football player in his home state of Connecticut. We regularly enjoyed a few beers together and often played racketball on campus; it was actually called paddleball back then. Jim was a competitor always giving 110%. My most vivid remembrance of Jim was from the Spring of 1967 or 1968. Jim had a large motorcycle and one warm Spring day was doing wheelies on the front lawn of the SAE House without wearing shoes. He asked me to get on the back of the cycle with him, which I did, and proceeded to do another wheelie. Tragically, as the wheelie went up the cycle twisted and turned and Jim lost control. The bike rolled and as Jim tried to control its descent, his foot pushed off the rubber sleeve from the footrest. As I fell off, the bike turned and the footrest impaled Jim’s ankle. He received a serious wound to his ankle. He was a strong and resilient guy. I graduated from UMO in 1970 and 1971 and unfortunately never saw or had further contact with Jim. Notwithstanding, the enduring bonds of friendship through our SAE brotherhood have remained over the years as I now mourn the loss of my friend and SAE Brother Jim Dinnan. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. Art Lloyd Littleton, CO

JIM DINNAN was a great friend and a superb builder (along with his partner, Peter Robbins) of our dream house on Deer Isle. Using an outstanding plan by Bob Knight, he and Peter built us a spectacularly beautiful home. And Jim's superb craftsmanship was a big factor in the beauty of our beloved home. It is a gem! Moreover, Jim's great friendliness made it a pleasure to know him. So when the job was done, and he moved on to his next project, there was a definite void in our lives-- even though we kept in fairly close contact with him for the rest of his too-short life.
