Obituary of Jean Harvell

AUGUSTA - Jean Harvell passed away on Oct. 19, 2018, at the age of 101, after a very brief illness. At the time of her death she was a resident of Augusta Center for Health and Rehabilitation, after living happily for 16 years at Granite Hill Estates in Hallowell. Jean was a southern gal, born and raised in Portsmouth, Va., and a 1938 graduate of The College of William and Mary, where she met her future husband of 63 years, Richard Harvell. After college she taught math in Virginia schools for two years until she married Dick and moved to New England to begin life as a Yankee. Jean and Dick lived in Manchester, N.H., and Cambridge, Mass., before settling in Goffstown, N.H., following WWII. When Dick retired, they left the cold winters of N.H. and moved to Naples, Fla. for 23 years, where they enjoyed the lovely beach and ocean waters, played tennis, and made new friends. Summers were spent at their cottage on the ocean in Steuben, a special place for them both and for Jean until the age of 97. In 2001 Jean and Dick moved from Naples to Granite Hill, a supportive and friendly community where Jean was comfortable and happy and continued to live independently after Dick died in 2003, remaining in her cottage until close to her 100th birthday. Jean is survived by her devoted family; daughters Linda Harvell of Manchester, and Judy Andersen and husband, Peter of Willington, Conn.; her grandson Eric Andersen and husband David Young, and her granddaughter, Kristen Andersen. She was predeceased by her husband Dick, her parents and siblings. She will be missed by her remaining relatives and friends, and by her two, special caregiver-companions, Kim Leask and Stephanie Smith. The family are also grateful for the care and support of the staff at Augusta Rehab. Her ashes will join Dick's, in the waters of her beloved Pigeon Hill Bay, in Steuben. We thank all who were able to join Jean, or sent their good wishes, for the celebration of her 100th birthday in 2017, and will cherish that time as a special remembrance.
