Obituary of Flora Ann Shorey

Flora Ann (Somers) Shorey, 86 years old from Camden passed away on Friday October 19, 2018 after a brief period of declining health. Born on a farm in Vermont’s “Northeast Kingdom” in the village of West Barnet on July 23, 1932, she was the daughter of John and Gladys Somers. She attended high school at the Academy in St Johnsbury, Vermont, and went on to earn her teaching degree from Lyndon State College in 1954. She also earned a Master in Education from the University of Maine. She taught elementary education at public schools in Vermont, Connecticut, New York, and Maine. In the early 70’s she joined the Bangor School System where she taught 2nd grade at the former Dow Lane School, Kindergarten at Fruit Street School, and finished her career as a 1st grader teacher at Abraham Lincoln School. Always full of energy and fun, she strived to ensure every child was welcomed and loved in her classroom. Being outgoing and friendly, Flora developed strong friendships throughout her life. She enjoyed meeting new people and valued listening as much as talking. She was funny, loving, strong-willed, open minded, generous, thrifty (truly Scottish), and hard-working. Above all to her family, she was a greatly loved Daughter, Sister, Mother and Grandmother. She was a creative soul, who was well known for turning outdated wool clothing into beautiful braided rugs. She was an excellent cook and baker. She produced amazing “Anadama” Bread, Cinnamon rolls, Danish puffs, and her children’s favorite Christmas treat called Yummy Bars. She always cherished the spiritual aspects of a Church and upon moving to Camden easily connected with The First Congregational Church. She especially enjoyed her charitable efforts of mending clothes or sorting greeting cards for Heavenly Threads along with making bread and setting up table settings for the soup lunches. Flora is survived by son, Mark Lowell; daughter, Kimberly Nason; daughter in law, Pamela Lowell; son in law, Richard Nason; four grandchildren: Edmund Lowell, Warren Lowell, Julia Nason and Sarah Nason; siblings: sisters, Awilda Stowe and Alberta Dunbar, brother, Hezzie Somers; sister in law, Marion Somers; sister in law, Lorena Lowell; brother in law, Perry Lowell and his wife Joan; and many loving and caring nephews and nieces.
