Obituary of Walter Lewis Eddy

Walter Lewis Eddy, Jr. November 8, 1917 –September 26, 2018 After living a full life, Walter Eddy, just short of his 101st birthday, passed away peacefully at Sussman House after being transferred there from Quarry Hill where he had been lovingly cared for by family and friends and the dedicated staff in assisted living. Family members were with him when he died, as well as the compassionate hospice nurses who were a comfort to both Walter and his family. Born in Washington, DC, on November 8, 1917, Walter attended Charlotte Hall Military Academy for high school, followed by graduation from Rhode Island State College (today University of Rhode Island) in 1940. After college he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the US Marine Corps and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel by 1949. He served in World War II, and the Korean War. Walter retired from the Marine Corps in December 1960, after 20 years of service. Walter married Margaret (Maggie) Benning Ray from Port Washington, New York on June 27, 1942. They were married for 71 years before her death in 2013. Their family life together revolved around Walt’s military career and led them and their three sons to California, North Carolina, Hawaii, and eventually to Norfolk, Virginia where they lived until their move to Tenants Harbor, Maine in 1967. After moving to Maine, Walt worked for the State of Maine in several capacities including a vocational rehabilitation counselor at the Maine State Prison in Thomaston. Walt and Maggie loved their life in Maine. Their home in Tenants Harbor was a gathering place for friends and family. They both became regular members of The Episcopal Church of St. John Baptist in Thomaston where they were active for decades before moving to Quarry Hill in Camden. Walt will be remembered as a guiding force for his family and he will be greatly missed. Walt is survived by his three sons, Philip (wife Cheri), Michael, and Andrew (husband Al); grandchildren Shane (wife Kristin), Skye (husband David) , Nicholas, Christopher (wife Janelle), and Alissa; great-grandchildren Cali, Davis, Reece, Finn, Aurora and Embry. A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Thomaston on October 25, 11:00 a.m. After the service a private family gathering will take place in Tenants Harbor.
