Obituary of Barbara S. Paul

Barbara S. Paul, 84, of Yarmouth, ME died on July 5th, 2018 at the Warren, ME home of her son, David & daughter-in-law Elizabeth. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Simmons and Mary (Cornell) Simmons of Needham, MA, and also her sister Jo-Anne. She is survived by her former husband, Warren Paul of Lake Clark, FL, her son Brice Paul of South Abington, PA, and son & daughter-in-law David and Elizabeth Paul of Warren, ME, as well as grandsons Adam Paul of Rockland, ME and Miles Paul of Union, ME. Barbara grew up in Needham & Medfield, MA, but spent most of her summers on Cousins Island in Casco Bay, ME, and always considered Yarmouth, ME to be her home. In 1963, she purchased land on Sturdivant Island in Casco Bay, and that become our family camp & one of Barbara's favorite places to be. She was very adventurous, becoming a stewardess for Eastern Air Lines in the 1950's, and traveled to many world-wide destinations during her time with them. She left the airline in 1961 to marry Warren Paul, who was serving in the Marine Corps, and over the next 14 years they moved frequently, spending time in NY, NJ, OH, KA, and PA. In 1975, they decided (amicably) to split up, and Barbara moved back to Yarmouth, ME with her 2 boys. She attended University of Southern Maine and in 1979 received a bachelor’s degree in Accounting. After graduation, she worked for Maine Savings Bank, and was eventually promoted to a position as a senior Bank Officer. She later became a Certified Management Accountant and left the bank to run her own accounting service until her retirement in 2004. She served on the Yarmouth town counsel from 1985-1988, and the Yarmouth school board 1994-1997. In 1991, she moved to Homewood Village in Yarmouth, ME, and lived there until the Fall of 2017, when her failing health required her to move in with David & Liz in Warren, ME. She was loved and respected by all who met her, and she will be greatly missed. Volunteer work: Barbara was very active with the Island Institute from the early 1980's through the 1990's, and she founded the Sturdivant Island Community Association (SICA) in 1984. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Yarmouth and was baptized there. She also did volunteer work at the Brunswick Humane Society for many years. She loved animals and had dogs and/or cats for most of her life. Later in life she watched the many birds that came to her bird feeder daily. Services: Her memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 4th, 2018 at 4:00pm at the First Baptist Church of Yarmouth, 346 Main Street, Yarmouth, ME 04096. Donations in her memory can be directed to the Humane Society of Brunswick, ME.
