Obituary of Barbara Elaine Davis
Barbara Elaine Davis went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 19, 2018. Scotty’s faith had laid up her treasure in heaven and she was reunited with her husband, Donald.
Scotty was born Barbara E. Mason, on June 21, 1927, in New Haven, CT, and lived her childhood in Augusta and Portland, ME, before spending her teens in Jamaica Plain, MA. Always a joiner, she participated in ten clubs in high school; ever efficient, she still made the Honor Roll and graduated valedictorian of her class. Scotty worked her way through Bates College (Lewiston, ME), majoring in History and Government, and became the first college grad in her family. She married her college sweetheart, Don Davis, in 1950, and they enjoyed 59 years together, until his home-going in 2010.
Scotty had the heart of a teacher. “Hopes to teach,” her college yearbook says, describing Scotty’s dream that she lived out daily. Though she taught high school English for just one year and worked as a substitute teacher and tutor, she was a lifelong teacher to her children, grandchildren, and great granddaughters. She also voluntarily taught English to three generations of Vietnamese immigrants, helping them assimilate into the US culture. Scotty and Don became “adopted parents” to these very dear friends.
Through the years, Scotty enjoyed tennis, skiing, boating, Ping-Pong, cards, board games, strolling in nature, enjoying the beach in and out of the water, playing piano, singing, dancing, exercising, knitting, sewing, quilting, gardening, decorating, reading, and Bible study. However, her core passion was building relationships. Age never mattered to Scotty, who embraced people of all walks of life. Her wit and humor, outgoing kindness, and zeal to champion the underdog drew hundreds of friends to her. She was making friends until her last conscious day, charming nurses with her wit and quiet alto voice as she sang hymns along with her children.
Scotty resided in Bloomfield, CT, for 57 years. From 1988-1998, Don and Scotty founded and headed the Bloomfield Beautification Committee. They cleaned up and planted the town green, planting trees and 28 flower gardens, and turned seven blacktopped traffic islands into landscaped areas of shrubs and flowers.
As an active member of Wintonbury Church of Bloomfield, CT, Scotty participated in all aspects of church life, especially in small groups, the calling ministry, and choir. Upon moving for health reasons to Cape Elizabeth, ME, in 2016, she was welcomed into Christchurch Evangelical Covenant Church of Portland, ME.
Scotty is survived by children Donna Lynne Keenan and her husband, Russell, of Cape Elizabeth, ME; Scott Hathaway Davis and his wife, Lorraine, of Wheaton, IL; and Andrea Lee Davis of Altadena, CA; grandchildren Jennifer Harrell and her husband, Paul; Scott Keenan and his wife, Sarah; Emily Sczepanski and her husband, Matthew; Anne Davis and her partner, Benjamin Wood; Cheryl Whiting and her husband, Seth; Mark Davis; Croix Griffin; and Aria Griffin; great granddaughters Ellie Harrell, Fiona Harrell, and JQ Whiting; sister Virginia Brett; sisters-in-law Constance McConnell and Cheryl Donaldson-Davis; many nieces and nephews; and countless friends she regarded as family.
Scotty’s family is very grateful for the love and care she received from the residents and staff at The Landing at Cape Elizabeth, Maine Medical Center R5, and Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.
In lieu of flowers, please send memorial gifts to World Vision, Alzheimer’s Association, or Wintonbury Church.
