Obituary of Michael T Atwater

Michael T. Atwater, SR, 61, of Gardiner died November 19, 2017, at Glenridge Nursing Home, after complications of a stroke he suffered in July. He was born in Augusta on March 4, 1956, to Charlie and Barbara Atwater. Michael worked at Bath Iron Works for 37 years in the paint department. He also was the Assistant Fire Chief on the Gardiner Fire Department for many years, receiving Firefighter of the year in 1986. He was an avid NASCAR fan and loved going on ATV rides with his close friend Leroy Merry, Jr. “Punk” and his grandson. Michael was preceded in death by his parents Charlie and Barbara Atwater and his brother Charlie Atwater. He is survived by his one and only son Michael Atwater, JR and his wife Kourtney Atwater, his only grandson Brady Atwater of Windsor, his brother Robert Atwater of Gardiner, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many close friends. At the request of Michael’s wishes there are no planned visiting hours or funeral services. A Celebration of Life will be at a later date with only close family and friends. The family would like to give special and heartfelt thanks to the nurses and CNA’s at Glenridge for the care and compassion they showed Michael during the last months of his life.
