Obituary of Carolyn S. Hoerth
Carolyn Ann Shields Hoerth of Westport Island, Maine passed away on August 30th at age 93, after a brief illness. She was born November 16, 1923, in Columbus, Ohio, and was the 4th of 5 children of Reverend Richard E. and Eloessa Shields. As a daughter of a Moravian minister, she lived in various communities, including Columbus, OH, Capitola, CA, Chicago, Il, Joplin, MO, Mountain Lakes, NJ, and others, graduating from New Trier H.S. in Evanston, Il.
Carolyn attended Hanover College and graduated from Western College for Women with a degree in English/Theater in 1945. Carolyn worked as a grade school art teacher, interior designer, and designer/drafter at a GE jet engine plant. She met her husband, Joseph G. Hoerth, in Cincinnati, while working for the Bell Telephone Company. She and Joseph were married in 1948 and had 4 children: Jeffrey; Susan; Oakley; and Thomas.
Carolyn’s anchor in life was her belief and faith in God, adherence to pure and simple truth, and love for everyone, even though she might not have liked everyone. She volunteered and supported many charitable groups such as Save the Children, Appalachia House, local hospitals wherever she lived, Burrwood Home for the Blind and Doctors Without Borders.
Carolyn enjoyed water sports, horseback riding, skiing, skating, walking and tennis up to age 80. She and her husband traveled extensively in the Caribbean Islands, Europe and the US in its entirety.
Carolyn is predeceased by her 4 siblings and is survived by her husband, 4 children, 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Memorial donations can be made to Save the Children and /or Doctors Without Borders.
