Obituary of Doris Freeman
Millinocket-Scarborough - Doris G. Freeman, devoted wife, mother and grandmother passed away October 28, 2016 in Scarborough, Maine. Doris was born Doris G. Vachon on May 27, 1927 in Auburn, Maine to Stephanie (Leger) and Valere T. Vachon. She is predeceased by her parents and her younger brother/partner in crime Donald Nelson Vachon of Phoenixville, PA.
Doris grew up in Auburn where she graduated from Edward Little High School, class of 1945. She attended the Auburn School of Commerce while working for Trober Furs in Lewiston where her duties included bookkeeping, buying and modeling. After meeting the love of her life, Carroll William Freeman Jr., she married in 1951 and immediately moved to Millinocket to begin a life of strong commitment to family, faith and community.
Doris was an engaged stay-at-home mom raising five children. She was actively involved in their lives as a Cub Scout leader and later as a local leader and volunteer for the Abenaki Girl Scout Council, as well as past president of the Stearns High School Music Booster Club. As a communicant of St Martin of Tour’s Catholic Church she was a longtime member and past president of the annual Harvest Tea Committee and very active with the Katahdin Area Support Group.
As her children grew older, Doris returned to college graduating from Husson College with a BA degree in business. This later led to her true calling as the Coordinator of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program where for over 30 years she quietly supported and aided countless people across northern Penobscot and southern Aroostook counties. Her efforts were recognized by the Internal Revenue Service where she was honored with a National Volunteer Service Award.
Doris’s life of volunteerism, love for family and strong faith will be forever remembered and cherished by her children and their spouses: Linda Freeman Kilar and her husband, Fred of New London, NH, C. William Freeman and his wife Sharon of Readfield ME/Treasure Island, FL, John P. Freeman and his wife Lavina of Millinocket, Kevin M. Freeman and his wife Michelle of Scarborough and Anne Freeman Walker and her husband Eric of Naples, ME. She leaves 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren as well as dear cousins, Norman Pichette of Auburn, Nancy Pichette Nendall of Ogunquit and Arlene Roach of Minot. Doris also leaves special nieces and nephews, Denise Fennelly of Malvern, PA, James Vachon of Brownsburg, IN, Cathy Stofflet of Windham, David Vachon of Phoenixville, PA, great nieces, nephews, godchildren and many dear friends.
We take comfort in knowing that she now rests renewed in spirit with her loving husband Carroll, who predeceased her in 2013. Doris’s family extends a heartfelt thank you to all those who helped make her final days as comfortable and peaceful as possible especially Beacon Hospice and the Scarborough Terrace Rose Garden Staff.
A fellowship with the immediate family will be held Monday, November 7 from 10:30-11:30 in the lobby of Saint Martin of Tour’s Catholic Church. A funeral mass will follow at 11:30.
