Obituary of Charlotte M Lawson
TREMONT – Charlotte M. (Dunbar) Lawson, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loving family on Aug. 14, 2016. She was born on July 27, 1932, in Bernard, daughter of John E. Dunbar and Dorothy (Ellis) Dunbar.
Charlotte grew up in Manset with her seven siblings and loving parents. They spent their childhood playing on the Manset shore and running through the Manset woods as well as walking uptown (Southwest Harbor) to the movies and the carnival.
After graduating from Pemetic High School in 1951, she was swept off her feet by a dashing young gentleman by the name of George Lawson. They fell in love, were married, and settled in Tremont. George and Charlotte were known for their stylish dancing skills spending many nights at the VIA Hall in Manset dancing the night away. In her younger days, Charlotte was a member of the Pythian Sisters, which were affiliated with the Knights of Pythias. A qualification of being a Pythian Sister meant you had to be of good moral character and she was that without a doubt.
In 1952, George and Charlotte started their family. They spent many weekends going to the state fairs, camping on the side of the road in their pickup truck and picnicking on their lobster boat. Family came first for Charlotte, and she devoted her life to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Until the day she passed, she remained their strongest advocate whether they were right or wrong. She loved them wholeheartedly. You could always count on Gramomma.
Charlotte was known around town for her Halloween and Christmas spirit, which lit up Main Street in Bernard during the months of October and December. No expense was spared to spread the joy with her elaborate lights, decorations, Halloween candy and Christmas presents.
Charlotte is survived by her children, Belinda Lawson and partner Ken Odgen of Seal Cove, Pam Lawson of Ellsworth, Cindy Murphy and partner Michial Jewett of Southwest Harbor, Gregory Lawson and his wife, Angie, of South Bristol, George G. Lawson Jr. and his wife, Beth, of West Tremont, Jennie Gray and her husband, Jon, of Greenville. Her greatest joy in life was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Sonja Waldrop and husband, Michael, Chantel Flewelling and husband, Russ, Travis Murphy, Isiah Gray and wife, Tara, Mariah Coffin and husband, Jonathan, Dustin Lawson, John Perry Lawson and Ashley Lawson; (grandchildren); Branson, Michaela, Lawson-Leigh, Jorgie, Logan, Reese, Alexa, Georgia, Shelby, Charlotte, Carter, Avery and Kayden (great-grandchildren); three step-grandchildren; Crystal, Chelsea and Christian. Charlotte is survived by her sisters, Gertrude Gascon, Pauline Moody, and Joyce Kenney and husband, Jim; and brothers, Edwin Dunbar and wife, Carolyne, and Guy Dunbar and wife, Paula; and sister-in-law, Peggy Dunbar.
She was predeceased by her parents and two brothers; Ralph Dunbar and John Dunbar and two brothers-in-laws, George Gascon and Nick Moody. A family service will be held on Sept. 3, 2016, at 10 a.m. at the Head of the Harbor Church in Bass Harbor. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Downeast Horizons, 77 Union St., Ellsworth, ME 04605.
