Obituary of Mary E Mulquin
Mary Elizabeth McClean Mulquin died peacefully on July 28, 2016, at the age of 98. She grew up and lived in Baltimore County, Maryland, before moving to Maine, where she lived for thirty-eight years in Penobscot and then Blue Hill. She is predeceased by her husband, Bill, daughter Martha Sawyer, and granddaughter, Rebecca Sawyer.
Mary is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Anne and Lin Parker of Penobscot and Ellen Mulquin and Joe Sullivan of Bethesda, Maryland. She knew no greater joy than her three grandchildren and their spouses, and most of all, her six great-grandchildren. Times spent together were epic and adventurous, filled with love and laughter. Her chocolate chip cookies, blueberry pies, and muffins were renowned among family and friends.
Mary cared deeply about the rights of women and children and was a strong proponent of education. In order to complete here own education, she commuted an hour each way by street car to graduate from Towson State College. She taught fourth grade before her daughters were born. She was also a Girl Scout leader and volunteered in Baltimore City in the 1970’s in a program for treating children who had been exposed to lead, and in a program for children with special needs. She enjoyed needlepoint, bridge, golf, reading, traveling, and winters in Hawaii.
In the words of the Parker Ridge Community who lovingly embraced her, “She was a sincere, gracious, quiet lady with a good heart.”
