Joan A. deGarmo passed away peacefully with her daughter by her side in the emergency room at LincolnHealth - Miles Campus on Feb. 5.
She was born June 5, 1917 to Harry and Sarah Smith Askew in Stamford, Conn. She graduated from Stamford High School and trained as a nurse at the Greenwich Hospital School of Nursing in Greenwich, Conn. There she met and married the "love of her life" Stanley deGarmo. They raised three children and lived a fulfilling life. They moved to Southport in 1964, rebuilding an old inn into a home.
She enjoyed decorating, antiques, pot gardening, and writing. She was a caring friendly lady who deeply loved her family and will be greatly missed.
Stanley predeceased her in 1975.
She is survived by her son Sherburne and daughter-in-law Barbara deGarmo; daughters Marjorie deGarmo, and Joan and son-in-law Robert Caird; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and a nephew and his wife.
She wished to be cremated and a memorial service and burial will take place this summer.
