Obituary of Eleanor Mae Sargent Beverage

Samuel 22:3 “The God of my rock; in him will I trust…” Eleanor Mae Sargent Beverage, beloved wife of the late Samuel Hiram Beverage, both of North Haven, Maine, passed peacefully, with family members by her side for several days, at the Knox Center for Long Term Care in Rockland, Maine, on July 13, 2016, at the age of ninety-four years and nine months. Born in Medford, Massachusetts, she moved with her family back to Sorrento, Maine as a child where she lived until enrolling in the Knox County General Hospital School of Nursing in Rockland, Maine, where she earned her RN degree and met her future husband in the early Summer of 1940. In May, 1945, upon his return from WWII, she married Samuel Beverage in Somerville, Massachusetts, then the couple headed to Florida via New York, pending Samuel’s Honorable Discharge in October, 1945. They subsequently bought a home in Saugus, Massachusetts, where they raised five children, during which time Eleanor was an active member of the Church of the Nazarene in Malden and then Melrose, Massachusetts, where she was a member of the choir and a Sunday School teacher. Eleanor and Samuel returned to North Haven in 1973. Eleanor served for many years as the Sunday School Superintendent and Teacher at the North Haven Baptist Church, as well as an active choir member. She was very active in the community for many years, volunteering in numerous capacities, including as an Emergency Care Provider, Election Officer, and caregiver for several elderly family members. Over the years, many people have been blessed by Eleanor’s earnest encouragement and positive advice when they were facing personal trials of any kind. With Lewis and Ida Haskell, Ellie and Sam were instrumental in the establishment of the North Haven Historical Society, for which Eleanor served as Corresponding Secretary for many years. Both were members of the Mayflower Society and tireless researchers in history and genealogy, always delighted to spend time gathering and organizing detailed historical information for anyone seeking help. Eleanor was a great baker, and her cookies, cakes, yeast breads, rolls, and fresh baked pies were legend, but her children and grandchildren will always remember her for her relentless pursuit of victory in Scrabble and Uno. Eleanor is survived by her 5 children, 12 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and various spouses, including Sandra & Edward Andrews, Barry & Ethel Beverage, Stephen Beverage, Julia & Ron Cobb; grandchildren Sheila & Dana Dyke, Paul & Stephanie Andrews, Chris & Andrea Hayes, Heidi Beverage, John & Nadja Beverage, Mary & Robert Bates, Steven Beverage, Jessica Beverage, Courtney Beverage, Joshua Beverage, Eric Cobb, & Justin Cobb; great-grandchildren: Dyana Dyke, David Dyke, Daniel Dyke, Antonio Andrews, Ryan Beverage, Riley Beverage, Brooke Berry, plus 5 step-grandchildren and 5 step-great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband of 71 years, Samuel H. Beverage, and daughter-in-law, Kim Beverage. Plans are being made for a memorial service for family members and friends and interment of Eleanor and Samuel’s ashes on what would have been their 72nd Anniversary, June 1, 2017. Meanwhile, they will sit side by side again, overlooking the Mill Stream, watching the majestic Eagles, Osprey, Hawks, and other birds fly by in all their glory, and enjoying the familiar ebb and flow of the tidal waters from Hiram’s Pond.
