Michael K. Ellingwood Obituary
Michael, known as”Mike,” by family and friends passed away at age 75 while in treatment for esophageal cancer at Grey Birch Nursing Facility in Augusta, ME. He previously resided at the Inn at City Hall Assisted Living for several years. Mike was born in Gardiner, Me to Everett Morse and Natalie (Rollin) Ellingwood. His younger brother, Dale, predeceased him. He is survived by his sister, Donna Lee (Ellingwood) Townsend, of Boston, MA and his niece and nephew Amy and Christopher Townsend-Small.
Mike graduated from high school in Maine and attended college at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. He was an honest, thoughtful, kind, and intelligent man, always willing to help others when asked. His father, Everett, was an electrician at the Togus Veterans Facility, and Mike quickly learned his father’s trade. Mike was also a self-taught electronics wiz and generally known as a Mr fix-it.
Mike was always quiet and introspective, and like his father, he appeared to be a quintessential “Downeaster” with affect and accent to match. Many helpers mentioned in jest that he often reacted or spoke with his eyebrows, not words. His legacy is rooted in his intensive research to map the Ellingwood lineage. Ralph Ellingwood (a.k.a Ellenwood) b.1607 boarded the ship, Trulove, in London and sailed to Boston to settle in Salem, Ma in 1635. Relatives later migrated to Caribou, ME where Everett was born. Mike’s ashes will be spread on Mt. Katahdin, one of his favorite places to hike.
Memories and condolences may be shared with the family on his tribute wall.
