Joan Celeste Height Obituary
Joan Celeste (Meade) Height, 91, of Milbridge, Maine, was called home to the Lord on May 14, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Born on January l 0, 1935, in Meriden, Connecticut, to Andrew .J. Meade and Lucille (Tarantino) Meade, Joan grew up in Southington, Connecticut, where she developed the strong sense of faith, family, and service that would define her life.
On October 23, 1954, Joan married the love of her life, William Boyd Height. Together they raised five children-four daughters and a son-and built a home filled with warmth, laughter, and unwavering devotion. In 1963, Joan and Bill purchased a summer home in Milbridge, affectionately known as "Heightsville," where they spent many joyful summers and Thanksgiving holidays surrounded by extended family and friends. In 1985, fulfilling Bill's long-held dream, Heightsville became their permanent residence.
Demonstrating her deep commitment to education, Joan enrolled at Central Connecticut State College in 1972 and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1978 with a Master of Science degree in Special Education and Elementary Education, with a minor in psychology. She dedicated many years to teaching in the Southington school system and later continued her career in Milbridge until her retirement. Her passion for learning and her love for her students left a lasting impact on countless young lives.
Joan's life was rooted in faith, community, and family. She was always ready to lend a hand, volunteer her time, or offer a warm smile. One of her grandchildren lovingly nicknamed her "Buzzy Bee," a name that stuck because Joan was always buzzing from one activity to the next-fundraising, quilting, garden club, parish events, and hosting sleepovers for her grandchildren. She cherished time at Camp on Pleasant River Lake, enjoyed long walks,
perfected her bread baking, and embraced new hobbies with enthusiasm. Her joyful presence and open heart drew people to her effortlessly.
She lived by the words of her Savior, Jesus Christ: "This is my commandment. Love one another as I have loved you." (John 15:12). Joan is now reunited with her beloved husband, William (Bill), and her son, William Jr. (Billy). She is survived by her four daughters-Bonnie & Campbell Peterson, Kim & Gus Francis, Susan & Jeff Risbridger, and Tina & (Cappy Sargent deceased)-along with 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and a wide circle of friends and community members who were shaped by her kindness, strength, and vibrant presence.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on July 10, 2026, at St. Michael Church in Cherryfield, Maine. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter the Fishennan Parish, Machias, Maine, designated for St. Michael - Cherryfield.
