Joseph Douglas Gilliam Obituary
Joseph Douglas Gilliam Sr, 57, of West Bath, Maine peacefully passed away with his wife, Shannon, of 42 years by his side on May 11th, 2026.
Joe grew up in West Point, Maine, the son of Myrna and Phillmore “Ned” Gilliam. Joe was the youngest of six siblings. He was a very loving, strong opinionated man, who couldn't wait to tell you that you were wrong. He was a jack of all trades. Joe always said “If one man built it, another man can fix it.” Anyone that knew Joe, knew his love for Budweiser, Marlboro’s, the Buffalo Bills, pizza, and the Galley restaurant. Joe enjoyed spending time with his friends and family hunting, fishing, camping, or just sitting around a fire.
Joe worked many trades throughout his lifetime. He was employed for 16 years at Bath Iron Works. His other careers often centered around the waters surrounding Phippsburg. Joe spent many years working alongside his best friend, Heath “Hydro” Hawkes lobstering. He ended his career working for Kennebec Marine Services, where the team there became his second family.
Joe is survived by his wife, Shannon and children Brandan, Joey, Brooke, and Chris Rittall. He was a devoted grandfather to grandchildren Brett James Gilliam and Payten Melissa Gilliam. His siblings, Don and Tracy, Brian and Dianna, Mark and Bethany, Audrey and Arlen, Pam and Lester. He considered Jim, Terry, and Bo Layton, and predeceased Mike Wyman as his brothers. Many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition, his prick work family at Kennebec Marine Services, Derek, David, brother Mike Farmer, Jeremy, Riley, Jamie, Kurt, Hogan, P.A. Mike, Brandon (Tater), Dan, and Maranda. As well as John Kelly, Timmy Lippert, and all his dear friends from P.A.
The family would like to thank the community for all their support in this hard time. A special thanks to hospice nurse Suzanne, Bridget, and Lisa for helping Joe and his family greatly in his final days. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 20th, 2026 at Ashley and Scott Thayer’s Camp at 165 Bayshore Rd. in North Bath, Maine 2pm to 5pm. Memories and condolences may be shared with his family on his tribute wall.
