Russell Neal Harrington Obituary
Russell Neal Harrington, known to many as “Rut,” and to his family as “Dad” and “Pa,” passed away on April 28, 2026, at the age of 83, with family by his side. He beat cancer, then spent two more years battling declining health, fighting fiercely with the support of family and friends until the very end.
Born on August 16, 1942, Russell spent his entire life in Friendship, Maine, shaped by the tides and the traditions of the generations before him. Growing up on his father’s boat, he learned the rhythms of the ocean early, and by 14 he had started lobstering full time. He followed that path for the next 65 years, spending most of his working life on the water aboard the LASCA J. During the off seasons, he worked on various boats as a first mate and cook: shrimping, groundfishing, and scalloping.
Russell proudly served his country in the United States Army and was a member of the Knights of Pythias for 40 years, an order that emphasizes loyalty, honor, and friendship.
Russell was hardworking, honest, and well-respected. He was a loyal friend, a loving father and grandfather, and a man of integrity. He was a good cook and enjoyed rabbit hunting with his beagles, deer hunting, fishing, digging a few clams for his supper, smelting, spending time visiting with family and friends, and making his regular social phone calls.
Many learned the ropes of fishing from Russell, including his children and grandchildren. Anyone who went sternman with him quickly realized that there was work to be done and no time to waste. No matter your age or gender, if you were on his boat, you were expected to pay attention, pull your weight, and “get outta the rope!”
He was predeceased by his parents, Mertland and Glenys Harrington; his brothers, Erville and Eugene Harrington; his former spouse, June Kenniston, who remained part of his life; and far too many close friends over the years.
Russell is survived by his brother, Bruce Winslow of Waldoboro; his daughter, Lasca Black of Augusta; his son, Lyndon Harrington of Friendship; grandchildren Crystal Adams of Waldoboro, Colby Black of Augusta, Rachelle Black of Augusta, and Siara Harrington of Waldoboro; 11 great-grandchildren; his stepchildren, Lorelie Davis, Lynette Farnum, and Leanne Caires; his nephew, Eugene Harrington, who was like a son to him; and many extended family members and friends.
The family would like to thank the many people who helped us support him over the last year, especially Danielle Reed, Lise Prock, and Tara Miller for helping care for him; Doyle Simmons, David Autio, and the many others who helped with frequent rides and visits; the Friendship Ambulance crew; and everyone who brought homemade meals, answered his many phone calls, and helped him remain connected to the community he loved.
To honor Russell’s request, the family will spread his ashes in Hatchet Cove, where he grew up, moored his boat, and began so many of his days. All boats that would like to join are welcome to follow the lead boat, MUTINY, departing from Scotty Carter’s Wharf May 31st at 12:00 p.m.
Following the return from Hatchet Cove (around 1:00 p.m.), friends, family, and community members are invited to gather at the Defiance Cottage, 77 Flood Cove Rd, Friendship.
Stop by to share stories, raise a toast to Russell, and spend time together the way he would have wanted. We’ll have food and drinks to share — anyone who’d like to bring a dish or six-pack is welcome.
