Franklin Earl Nelson Obituary
HARPSWELL, MAINE — Franklin Earl Nelson, a man of sharp intellect, deep devotion, and a lifelong thirst for adventure, passed away peacefully on his own terms at his home on the Harpswell Sound on April 2, 2026. He was 95 years old.
Born in the small town of Renovo, Pennsylvania, Frank’s journey took him from the Appalachian mountains of his youth to the far reaches of the globe. A proud graduate of Pennsylvania State University, he finished at the top of his class and immediately celebrated with a bold spirit that would define his life: he and a friend set off on a motorcycle tour through Spain and France. With nothing but backpacks and a sense of curiosity, they traversed Europe, finding new "fun things to get into" and beginning Frank's lifelong love affair with the open road.
Following his travels and his service in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War—where he put his technical mind to work supporting shipboard electronics—Frank earned a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from USC. He went on to a distinguished career as a Program Manager at TRW, where his leadership was highly regarded.
Frank’s life was defined by two great chapters of partnership. He shared 27 years and the joy of raising three sons with his first wife, Virginia. Following her passing, Frank found love again with Joan, whom he married in 1991. Upon retirement, the two embarked on a decades-long masterclass in "living life to the fullest," firmly believing you can’t take it with you. From the shores of Amelia Island to the rugged beauty of Maine, they traveled the world with style—crossing the Atlantic on the Queen Mary II, flying the Concorde, traversing Africa, and sailing the turquoise waters of Turkey.
When he wasn’t exploring, Frank was a man of classic passions. He was an excellent card player, a skilled bowler, a master of Jeopardy! clues, and a devout Nittany Lion fan. Whether he was on the golf course or the boat, Frank moved through life with a steady hand and a warm heart. Above all his professional and personal accolades, he was a family man who loved his entire family deeply.
Frank is survived by his three sons: Steve (Elizabeth), Chris (Sonya), and John Nelson. He was a proud grandfather to Steve’s sons, Ben and Adam, and Chris’s children, Kaitleya and Jack. He is also survived by his extended family through Joan: her son William Hinckley (Katarina); grandchildren William Adams, Sarah Adams Ferguson (Kevin), Robert Hinckley, Sebastian Hinckley, and Gus Hinckley; and his great-grandson, Harry Ferguson.
Frank lived a great, expansive life. He leaves behind a legacy of curiosity and kindness that will be remembered by everyone he touched through his life journey.
Fair winds and following seas.
