Gordon W Cox passed away peacefully at Sussman House in Rockland Maine, after living with cancer for three years, on June 21, 2025. Pete, as he was known to family and friends, was born in Albany, New York on June 3, 1937, to W. Gordon Cox and Marion B. (Wiggins) Cox.
Pete attended the Millbrook School in Millbrook NY, later graduating from Avon Old Farms in Avon Connecticut, he attended Rollins College and then enlisted in the US Army. Upon his return he moved to New York City, where he began a lifelong career in title insurance. After marrying the late Louise D Bradley, the couple moved back to Old Chatham NY to run Antinore Farm while continuing his title insurance career in Albany NY. Although riding, foxhunting, and raising good hounds were always part of his life, he became even more active in the old Chatham Hunt Club, eventually following in his parents footsteps becoming Master of foxhounds, serving from 1966 - 1979. When he was not foxhunting he could be found trap shooting, playing tennis and fly fishing in his beloved Kinderhook Creek. He actively supported the Old Chatham Pony Club with countless hours of volunteering, providing mounts to young riders from near and far as well as passing on his love of equestrian sports, ever mindful of the balance between man and nature. Pete was an active member of the Tri-Village Fire Department, serving as chief for several years. During this time he was a member of the National Ski Patrol as well, he patrolled at the Catamount Ski Area in Hillsdale, MA.
Pete retired from Title Insurance in the mid 1990’s, at that time he followed his heart to his other love; the ocean. He took up residence in Port Clyde, Maine. Where he crewed for the Monhegan Boat Line on both the Laura B and Elizabeth Ann. He worked to gain a limited Captain's License, allowing him to Captain within a mile of shore, an accomplishment he was proud of. He later became the voice of the Monhegan Boat Line, sharing his love of nature and local history with hundreds of visitors on the Nature/Puffin Tours. He continued his work into his early eighties until a knee injury made standing on deck challenging.
He was diagnosed with cancer just before his eighty-fifth birthday. He chose to live with the cancer and not treat it and lived symptom free for the better part of three years. He was supported in this choice by his family. Pete spent his eighty-eighth birthday surrounded by some of his many friends (who have become like family) and oysters, two of his favorite things. He is survived by his daughter Ellenor W. Cox, son-in-law James Joyce and grandson Colin Joyce. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Aubrey Hutchison of Colorado and sister Louise Ainsworth of Connecticut. His family would like to thank the Nurses and doctors from the Home Based Health care Program at Togus as well as Maine Health Home Hospice and Inpatient Hospice Sussman House for their unwavering support. Pete was very well known and loved by many friends and neighbors throughout this part of Maine. His immense kindness, gentle way and endless stories will be missed by all who knew him.
Donations may be made in his honor to Pope Memorial Humane Society, 25 Buttermilk Ln, Thomaston, ME, 04861, and Sussman House, 40 Anchor Dr., Rockport, ME, 04856.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, July 27th at 4:30pm onboard the MV Laura B after heading to Eastern Egg Rock. Please contact the family for further details. Memories and condolences may be shared with his family on his tribute wall.
