Gary S. Nuite Obituary

Gary Stephen Nuite, 85, beloved husband and best friend of Pamela Fairbrother Nuite, went peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior on June 9, 2025, at his home in Clinton, Maine, surrounded by his family.

Gary was born in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, on November 27, 1939, the only child of Francis E. Nuite and Lena Doore Nuite.

From a very young age, Gary had a love for hard work and a genuine curiosity about how others did their jobs. Many of us remember him being invited to join lobster fishermen, work alongside potato farmers, or spend time tedding hay while on vacation in Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Gary attended Foxcroft Academy.  He enjoyed rides to Sebec Lake, roller skating, fishing, camping, and playing basketball with friends.  He also had a great love for music and could play many instruments by ear.  But nothing got Gary’s toes tapping like a good old-fashioned marching tune.

In quieter moments, Gary could often be found deep in concentration playing FreeCell on his iPhone. He treated it like a competitive sport, proudly texting his kids every time he hit a new milestone, eventually logging over 3,000 hours of playtime and wearing that stat like a badge of honor. His loyal cat Toby was never far, often curled up contentedly in his lap, earning the title of “best boy” without question. Gary also had a stubborn streak when it came to his garden he tried year after year to grow lupins, but despite his best efforts, they never quite took. Still, he never gave up, always hopeful that the next season might finally bring them to bloom.

After graduating from Philadelphia Textile, where he proudly put himself through college, Gary married Pam in 1964. Shortly after, they left Maine with only a suitcase and moved to Virginia, where they welcomed their first child, Doreen Marie. While in Virginia, Gary and Pam cherished time spent with their dear friends Ken and Lina Clinche. Doreen was often lovingly “babysat” by the Clinches’ German Shepherd, King.

After three years, Gary and Pam returned to Maine to be closer to family. In 1972, Gary accepted a position at Ski Land Woolen Mill in Clinton, where they purchased their cherished 13-room farmhouse on the Sebasticook River.

On January 19, 1977, they welcomed their second child, Francis William, lovingly named after both sides of the family.

Gary had a well known love for New England sports teams and could talk about them for hours with anyone willing to listen. He also had a deep appreciation for a good meal, especially his favorite meatloaf, his special birthday chop suey, strawberry shortcake, his famous peanut butter cookies, and, as he often said, “any kind of pie!”

He had a knack for spotting stray bungee cords on the side of the road and took great joy in long drives down winding dirt roads, most of which ended predictably with a “No Trespassing” sign. One of his favorite places to visit was Acadia National Park, where he found peace at Jordan Pond and loved picking rocks and shells along the shore at Seawall just across the road from his family’s favorite campsite, C1, at Seawall Campground.

Gary is survived by his wife of 61 years, Pam; two children, Doreen Sproul and her husband James of Winslow, and their son David; and Gary’s son Francis W. Nuite and his wife Stephanie. He is also survived by their children, Kiefer Donovan and Kaleigh Nuite of Nashua, New Hampshire, and Gianna Seavey of Standish, Maine. In addition to his immediate family, Gary is lovingly remembered by several cousins and nieces, all of whom held a special place in his heart.

His kindness and presence extended far beyond his own family many of his children’s friends affectionately called him “Dad,” a true testament to the impact he had on those around him.

In lieu of flowers, and in keeping with Gary’s generous heart, the family invites you to honor his memory through a donation to the Clinton Community Food Bank, P.O. Box 42, Standish, ME 04084 or by offering a random act of kindness, a gesture Gary believed reflected the love of Christ in everyday life.

A Celebration of Life will be held in worship and song on Saturday, July 12th at 2:00 PM at Brown Memorial United Methodist Church, 36 Church Street, Clinton. We gather to give thanks for Gary’s life, to celebrate his homegoing, and to rejoice in the promise of eternal life through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
