James Russell Stark Obituary

James R. Stark (Bub)

October 23, 1947 – April 6, 2025

James R. Stark, 77, affectionately known as Bub, of Washington, Maine, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2025, surrounded by his beloved wife, Brenda, and cherished grandchildren. Born on October 23, 1947, in Brunswick, Maine, to Malcolm and Stella Stark, Bub lived a life filled with music, hard work, and a warmth that touched everyone he met.

Raised on a farm in Burkettville, Maine, Bub learned the value of dedication early on. When the Vietnam War draft called, he married his lifelong partner, Brenda, and served honorably aboard the USS Forrestal, returning with quiet strength and a ready smile. A self-taught guitarist, Bub was the heart of every family gathering, especially at his sister Molly’s, where he played favorites like “The Chocolate Ice Cream Song,” “The Auctioneer,” and Johnny Cash classics. His quick wit and music filled those nights with laughter and memories that families still hold dear.

Bub was passionate about the outdoors, always busy on his tractor—grading roads, town rules or not—or tending gardens and animals, including his horse Roscoe. He loved boating, water skiing, chopping firewood, and building with skill. The sound of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren laughing during tractor or Roscoe rides was his greatest joy. A dedicated member of the Farrar-Ross VFW Post 9437 and Grange, Bub supported veterans and strengthened community bonds. His faith guided him through Sunday services, and he and Brenda treasured Sunday drives, taking in Maine’s beauty together.

Bub was predeceased by his parents, Malcolm and Stella Stark; sisters, Nancy Turner (Louis) and Molly Leigher (Frank); brother, Stanley Stark (Wanda); and several nephews and nieces. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Stark; children, Dennis Stark, Austin Stark, and Valerie Stark; brother, Malcolm Stark (Vicki) of Washington State; grandchildren, Adam Smith, Joshua Stark, Miranda Stark, Mariah Stark, Austin Stark, Abigail Stark, Noah Stark, Kelli Stark, Emily Simmons, Magnolia Simmons, and Colin Simmons; great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Hunter, Madison, Bailey, Carsyn, Alya, and Eddie; and many adored nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A graveside service will be held at Pine Grove Cemetery, Appleton, Maine, on June 14, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., followed immediately by a gathering at the Union Masonic Hall, 149 Sennebec Rd, Union, Maine.

Memorial Contributions In lieu of flowers, donations are welcomed to the Farrar-Ross VFW Post 9437, P.O. Box 56, Washington, Maine 04574, a cause Bub valued deeply.

Bub’s life was a testament to love, work, and connection. His music at Molly’s, his wit, and his steady presence live on in his family, the land he shaped, and the community he strengthened. Bub’s legacy is one we will always cherish.
